Transport

12 months before the wedding book the wedding transport for the main party and alternative transport for the remainder for both the day time and night time. Take into consideration any events that may be taking place on the day when organising pick up times

Confirm in writing the type of car to be used, pick up and drop off point addresses, the time and venue of the ceremony.  Check that the total cost includes everything and that there are no hidden costs i.e. the hire of the car, the chauffeur, the travel cost and VAT.  Have contingency plans in place should there be problems with the transport or ensure that the company are covered for this eventuality.

Generally the best man drives to church in his or the groom's own car around thirty minutes before the ceremony is about to start, or arranges a taxi.

On the brides side the bridesmaids leave first with the mother or the mother will follow after.  The bride and father follow a few minutes before the ceremony is about to start.  It is a legal requirement to wear seat belts in the front and back of all cars excluding vintage models so this is worth remembering before deciding on your transport.

Guests are generally responsible for their own transport but the best man and ushers are there to ensure that there are no problems and that everyone gets there without any fuss.  Always check so that there are no misunderstanding.

It is the usually the best man’s responsibility to organise the going away car with the usual decorations of balloons, old tin cans, a boot etc but this will depend on whether the couple are going straight to their honeymoon destination or are staying at a hotel that evening and travelling the next day.  This is becoming more popular so that the couple are allowed to drink on the day.  The alternative is to have a member of the family or friend drive the going away car for them.  Find out the details in advance.  If you have decided on a taxi make sure this is booked in plenty of time and ask if it could be decorated.

Get full confirmation of all the charges in writing when making the booking.  It may be advisable to organise wedding insurance so that in the event of the car company going broke or not turning up on the day you will not suffer any financial loss.

Two to three months before the wedding make sure you have everything confirmed in writing.

Two to three weeks before the wedding confirm any last minute details along with arrival and delivery times.
