The Wedding Party & Guests

Wedding Party

Decide on your bridesmaids, best man, ushers & page boy.

Remember that there are certain responsibilities that each must perform so picking the best person for the job is crucial.

Bridesmaids are generally expected to cover the cost for their outfits and accessories, hairdressers plus any travel costs getting to and from the ceremony and receptions.  They are the first port of call to run errands for the bride and to assist in the planning and preparations for the wedding.  In some cases, where there is a tight budget, the bridesmaids will be called upon to help with the making of the gifts for the guests and wedding party.  The chief bridesmaid has a few extra duties including organising the hen party and has to ensure that everything runs smoothly for the bride before and on the day. A younger bridesmaid may be used as a flower girl.

The Best Man’s job entails not only the stag party and getting the groom to the church on time and sober but the wedding speeches.  Many a wedding is remembered for the best man’s wedding speech.  There are however other jobs expected.  The best man looks after the wedding rings, he takes care of the presents received ensuring they are dispatched to the correct location.  He takes charge of the ushers and the return of any rented suits, plus he takes an active part in the organisation of the travel arrangements.

Ushers are responsible for seating the guests in the church in the correct places, giving out any button holes and order of services at the same time and they help to ensure that all the guests are safely transported from the church to the reception. They help to decorate the going away car.

Page Boys generally do not have any duties although occasionally they can be used as the ring bearer.

One to two weeks before the wedding give the rings to the best man, give the best man a list of all the wedding services involved in your wedding day, in case they need to be contacted.  Check with your bridesmaids and ushers to make sure they've gotten their wedding outfits, confirm arrival times, and answer any last minute questions. Make sure they are aware of their responsibilities before, during and after the wedding day.

Size of Wedding - How Many Guests

Decide on the number of guests and make a list.  Remember to look at your budget before finalising numbers.  The more guests the higher the costs and the greater the responsibilities.

Discuss travel arrangements with your guests, booking hotels and B & B’s as required and in plenty of time.
